Foundation laid for Jurala project

Hyderabad , Feb. 20

THE Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, has laid the foundation stone for the Priyadarshini Jurala Hydro Electric Scheme (JHES) involving construction of a 240 MW powerhouse at Jurala dam across river Krishna near Revulapally village in Mahabubnagar district.

The Governments of AP and Karnataka have decided to share the costs and benefits of the joint powerhouse that was being built at an estimated cost of Rs 547 crore. The Power Finance Corporation had sanctioned a loan of Rs 438 crore for the project consisting of six units of 40 MW bulb type turbines.

According to AP Power Generation Corporation Ltd (APGENCO), which is entrusted with the responsibility of constructing the powerhouse, the first two units of 40 MW each are scheduled to be commissioned by December 2006 while the remaining four units will be taken up in the XI five-year plan. The annual average energy potential of JHES is 404 million units and the levelised tariff is expected to be around Rs 2.18 per unit.

The establishment of the joint powerhouse is expected to improve voltages in Mahabubnagar and Kurnool districts in AP and Raichur district in Karnataka, where large number of agricultural pump sets are installed. The water let out from the dam will flow into the Srisailam reservoir and utilised again for power generation by the powerhouses established at the place.
