International Travel Ireland Embassy opens visa centre in Chennai Our Bureau
Chennai , Feb. 22 THE Embassy of Ireland has opened a visa application centre in Chennai. It will be operated by VFS (India) Pvt Ltd. The centre will accept applications and provide advise and guidance to applicants. All applications will continue to be assessed by visa officers at the Irish Embassy in Delhi. Opening this centre will do away with the need for applicants to go to the embassy in Delhi to get their visas, according to Mr Patrick Scullion, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Ireland. He told a press conference here that the embassy would open more such centres across the country, including in Hyderabad and Kochi. Last year, there were 6,000 visa applications to visit Ireland. This included tourists, students and those going on business. Mr Scullion said that apart from a large number of information technology professionals going to Ireland on work, of late a large number of nurses were also going from south India to Ireland for employment. The IT professionals and nurses would constitute the working visa category, which accounted for 7 per cent of all visas issued. Students accounted for about 15 per cent of visas issued. The Irish visa application centre in Chennai is located on College Lane, Nungambakkam, the same place as the UK visa application centre.
