Infrastructure Logistics - Roadways Foundation laid for Rs 75-lakh road project between New Mangalore Port and Baikampady Industrial Area Our Bureau
Mangalore , Feb. 22 THE Minister for Large and Medium-scale Industries, Mr R.V. Deshpande, laid the foundation stone for work on the Rs 75-lakh road project between New Mangalore Port and Baikampady Industrial Area here. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Deshpande said the Government has sanctioned Rs 70 lakh for the project. The New Mangalore Port is the implementing agency for the work taken up under the "Assistance to States for Developing Export Infrastructure and Allied Activities" scheme. He said Karnataka is the only State to bring out an export policy, and added that it registered 25 per cent growth in exports during 2002-03. The State Government has released Rs 2 crore out of Rs 10 crore under the "Assistance to States for Developing Export Infrastructure and Allied Activities" scheme for the Export Promotion Industrial Park in Mangalore. Under the same scheme, Rs 10 crore has been sanctioned for the gauge conversion work between Mangalore and Hassan railway line. On the proposal for setting up a special economic zone in the coastal region, the Minister said that the Union Government has given in-principle approval for the project. Mr Deshpande said that Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd has submitted a proposal to the State Government for developing a 1,500-MW power generation plant. It has also given a proposal to supply natural gas from Mangalore to Bidadi in Bangalore through the pipeline. The Minister urged the implementing agency of the road project to complete the work by December 2004. The Chairman in-charge of New Mangalore Port Trust, Mr G.J. Rao, was present.
