Samba crop loss in Thanjavur district

PAUCITY of water has resulted in the loss of samba paddy crop raised in about 13,000 hectares in Thanjavur district.

According to sources, the worst affected areas are Orthanadu, Pattukkottai and Peraurani, covered by the Grand Anicut canal irrigation system. The crop loss in the district is put at Rs 38.40 crore. Due to drought conditions, about 55,000 hectares was not cultivated and the loss has been put at Rs 165 crore. Of the 79,000 hectares in which samba was cultivated, harvest has been completed in about 41,000 hectares. On the Thaladi, out of 13,900 hectares, harvest has been completed in 9,300 hectares.

Farmers are said to have taken to cultivation of black gram as the summer crop. Gingelly, groundnut, soya and sunflower cultivation has also recorded a rise, the sources added.
