Strike a success, say trade unions

Our Bureau

Chennai , Feb. 24

TRADE unions have termed today's strike by bank and insurance sector workers as a "total success."

Ten-lakh employees of banks and insurance companies struck work today in response to the call of the unions, "to oppose the Supreme Court verdict on the right to strike and demand immediate review of the decision." The unions also oppose the "anti-labour policies" and privatisation moves of the Government.

"Because of the total strike in banks, no bank branch could conduct any transaction," said Mr C.H. Venkatachalam, Secretary, All India Bank Employees Association and Convenor, United Forum of Bank Unions. "The entire financial sector came to a grinding halt," he said. The release says that over 2,500 employees took part in the strike in Chennai alone.

The All India Insurance Employees' Association has also called the strike "successful".
