Ratan Tata to head panel to assist hydrogen board

THE Minister for Non-conventional Energy Sources (MNES), Mr Karia Munda, has constituted a steering group under the chairmanship of Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons.
The brief of the steering group, set up to assist the National Hydrogen Energy Board (NHEB), is to present a report within the next four months for preparing an action plan for demonstration and commercialisation of hydrogen and fuel cell powered vehicles and power generating systems through private-public partnership.
While the President of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Mr Anand Mahindra, will be the co-Chairman of the group, the other members are to be selected from among the representatives from the Department of Science and Technology, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and MNES.
MNES had recently set up NHEB to guide the Indian hydrogen energy programme. Chairing its first meeting here on Monday, the Minister took up various issues concerning coordinated development of hydrogen energy programme for India, including production, storage, transport, distribution, safety, standards and applications.
Among others, the meeting was attended by Mr N.K. Singh, Member (Energy), Planning Commission, Mr Ratan Tata and Mr Mahindra.
The Ministry is working out the details of the NHEB roadmap, which will provide the basis for coordinated development of hydrogen energy, including production, storage, transport, distribution, safety, standards and applications. The road map is to be prepared and implemented under the guidance of the NHEB.
