Network industries to drive economy, says Kelkar

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb 24

THE real drivers of the economy will be the network industries such as roads, electricity, telecommunications and water apart from agriculture, which will play a pivotal role in all round development, said Mr Vijay Kelkar, Advisor, Ministry of Finance. The all pervasive "feel-good" factor is real.

Mr Kelkar was speaking at a session on `Overview of the Indian economy: Challenges and drivers of growth,' at the third Asia-Pacific Executive Forum (APEF), organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and East West Center of the US.

Mr Lakshmi Chand, Secretary, Department of Industrial Promotion and Policy, said that the economy was on a roll and the Asia-Pacific region was the most dynamic as far as growth was concerned.

The country was expected to sustain an eight per cent growth in GDP in 2003-04, he said and added that agriculture along with the services sector would spearhead the economic growth.
