SAARC tourism meet may discuss common visa

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad , Feb. 24

WITH India and Pakistan on one hand and Sri Lankan Government and LTTE on the other talking peace, South Asia is looking ahead to promote tourism in the region in a major way.

When the Tourism Secretaries of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) meet in Colombo in the third week of May, one of the major issues that might come up for discussion is to have a common SAARC visa.

"The SAARC visa will allow people outside the association to travel to any of the member country, while holding the visa for any other country in the region," Dr Prathap Ramanujam, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism (Sri Lanka), told Business Line. Besides, the meeting would deliberate on promoting inter region and intra region tourism.

Dr Ramanujan was in the city in connection with the launch of SriLankan Airlines services to Hyderabad on Sunday.

Asked about the impact of peace process on the tourism industry in Sri Lanka, he said there was a tremendous increase in traffic after the commencement of peace process.
