New Delhi , Feb. 25

THE Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) to promote trade, investment and economic relations between India and Pakistan. The memorandum was signed by the Assocham President, Mr Mahendra K. Sanghi, and the KCCI President, Mr Mohammad Siraj, in the presence of the Pakistan High Commissioner to India, Mr Aziz Ahmed Khan, and business leaders from both the sides. According to the MoU, the two chambers will exchange information to strengthen trade, technological and industrial cooperation; inform each other of all activities that have the potential to further trade and investments, regularly exchange publications and materials concerning economic development, foreign trade and investment policies and assist each other in organising business delegations, and facilitating their business contacts. Mr Sanghi and Mr Siraj said the current level of trade between India and Pakistan is ``very low and below potential.''

Mr Siraj said there is also a need for businessmen of India and Pakistan to form joint ventures. He also said that there is little ground to the apprehensions that Indian goods could pose a danger to goods in Pakistan.
