`Services must be part of WTO framework pacts'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 25

SERVICES would have to be necessarily included in any framework agreement that is being attempted by the US and the European Union (EU) to bring the multilateral talks at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) back on rail, Mr S.N. Menon, Special Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said here.

Addressing a session on "The WTO and the Cancun Meetings: Implications for India", at the 3rd Asia-Pacific Executive Forum, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the East-West Centre , Mr Menon said that there is an attempt by the US and the EU to reach a framework agreement on agriculture and non-agriculture market access by May-June this year.

"Services negotiations will have to form part of the package if consensus on the framework agreement is to be arrived at," Mr Menon said.
