THE South India Textile Research Association (SITRA), involved in research and development in non-conventional fibre development, has offered to fabricate and supply to a Tripura-based women self help group (SHG) a fibre extraction machinery for production of pineapple leaf fibre (PALF) using pineapple leaf as base raw material.
The five-part PALF production unit comprising the fibre decorticating, fibre-cleaning, carding, thread-making and rope making components, is to be supplied by SITRA to the Tripura SHG, the Mushroom Growers Welfare Society of Agartala.
The plant, which can engage 20 workers directly, will yield 35 kg of PALF fibre a day.
The unit could also be used to produce pure PALF fibre/yarn or the blended fibre using other natural fibres such as jute or banana stem-fibre for production of yarn that can find greater application in diverse handicraft/utility articles.
Estimated to cost Rs 5 lakh, the machinery is being produced as part of a sponsorship programme from the 22nd Assam Rifles from Tripura, which has offered to support the PALF extraction project for the SHG under the military-civil programme, according to a communication from the SITRA.
As a prelude to supplying the specific fibre machinery to the Tripura women SHG, SITRA had early this month offered a10-day on-the-job training on the PALF extraction for a five-member group from the Tripura SHG organised under the aegis of the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation of India.
