Coimbatore mops up Rs 2,403 cr in excise

THE Coimbatore zonal Central Excise comprising five excise commissionerates has mopped up an excise revenue collection of Rs 2,403 crore in 10 months ending January 2004. This is 9 per cent higher when compared with the excise revenue of Rs 2,203 crore collected for the corresponding period in 2002-03 fiscal. The zone comprises Salem, Tiruchi, Madurai and Tirunelveli, besides the Coimbatore commissionerate.
On the service tax front, the zone has yielded a revenue of Rs 163 crore from as many as 23,000 service tax assessees as on end-January 2004 compared to the Rs 113-crore collected for the full fiscal 2002-03, according to Mr J.M.K. Sekhar, Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, Coimbatore zone.
Mr Sekhar was addressing at the Central Excise Day observed here on Tuesday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first comprehensive Central Excise Act enacted in 1944 as the Central Excise and Salt Act.
On the pay-out to the exporters, the customs formations under his zonal office has disbursed during the 10 months of current fiscal ended January 2004 a sum of Rs 268 crore as duty drawback against Rs 441 crore during the 2002-03 fiscal.
Mr Sekhar said the electronic filing of returns by the service tax assessees was being encouraged and his department would extend similar facility for the central excise assessees too by July 2004.
