TN plans windmills in 27 more districts

THE State Government is contemplating to set up windmills in 27 more places in the State to cross the production of 300 MW in the wind farm sector within the current financial year.
Speaking to the presspersons at Tirunelveli, near here, the Chairman and Managing Director of Tamilnadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA), Mr K.Allaudin, who participated in a seminar on `Application of renewable energy in small and tiny industries' in the city, said the Government had identified 40 locations in the State viable for wind power production.
As already 17 of them have been tapped, the other areas including Cumbam valley and Ramanathapuram are to be tapped in the future. On gasifire power generation, using firewood, he said that TEDA has received 109 applications and approval has been given to 31 of them. The scheme would be introduced in 12 districts in the State and the investment required to start a 1-MW gasifire unit stood at Rs 1 crore. The Centre extends interest subsidy for such units, he mentioned.
Mr Allaudin added about 400 more villages in the Western and Eastern ghats and Kalrayyan and Kolli hills would be provided solar lamps at a cost of Rs 27 crore.
Earlier, the State Minister for Industries, Mr Nainar Nagendrean, inaugurating the seminar urged the industrialists to use solar power in their units.
