THE Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IITK), is setting up an exclusive Centre for Disaster Management, according to Dr S.K. Dube, Director.
To be functional from July 2004, the Centre, perhaps the first among the IITs, would be set up with funds from internal sources and participation of concerned scientific departments, Dr Dube told Business Line.
The Centre would offer specialised courses focussed on various aspects of disaster management, the technologies involved in better understanding and forecast of different disasters.
Dr Dube is here participating in the 4-day, international symposium on natural hazards (INTROMET-2004), organised by the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS), of which he is past President.
The IITK Director said Andhra Pradesh was perhaps among the first coastal States to formulate a detailed strategy for the mitigation of tropical cyclones and associated storm surges.
He felt that a multi-pronged strategy was needed to reduce the impact of natural disasters, involving various stakeholders.
With capabilities to forecast cyclones, storms etc. the big question was to ensure efficient management of the post-event fallouts, if any.
