MMA to organise women's convention

Our Bureau

Chennai , Feb. 25

WHY are there so few women in top executive positions?

Is it because women are able to prioritise better than men? Or are there genuine obstacles to women managers in achieving leadership roles?

With an increase in the number of women in the work force, these questions become relevant and finding answers to them would bring understanding on these issues.

These will be among the issues that will be discussed at an international women's convention being organised by the Women Managers' Forum (WMF) of the Madras Management Association (MMA) on March 6,to commemorate the International Women's Day.

The theme of the convention is `Breaking the glass ceiling - Strategies for success: People and profits'.

Ms Jayshree Venkatraman, Chairperson, MMA WMF, said that there was a ``marked disaffinity in industry to accept the need for gender neutrality in workplace.'' The convention hopes to create a greater understanding of the theme with reference to today's women managers without it becoming a feminist platform.Dr Prithika Chary, Co-Chairperson, MMA WMF, said an "Outstanding Woman Manager of the Year" award was instituted by MMA in 2002. The award for this year will be presented to Ms Rajani Seshadri of Tata Consultancy Services.

The previous year's winners were Ms Vasudha Narasimhan, ITC Ltd - 2002, and Ms Aruna Rangachar, Interspice Infotech Pvt Ltd - 2003.

Mr M.S.Kumar, President, MMA, said that the speakers at the convention include Mr M S Ramachandran, Chairman, Indian Oil Corporation; Mrs Lakshmi Pranesh, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary; Ms Mala Chandra, Vice-President and Director, Motorola; Ms Ravina Raj Kohli, President, Star News; and Ms Shyamala B Cowsik, Ambassador of India, The Hague.
