Letters Nuclear weapons
This is with reference to "Double standards in nuclear proliferation" (Business Line, February 26). The article was well written and exposes the double standards adopted by the US in the control of nuclear proliferation. One would be shocked to know that the US has recently laid out a nuclear policy that calls for the development of low-yield "mini nukes" and integrates nuclear weapons with conventional strike options. At the meeting where it was decided to develop low-yield mini nukes, the possible first-use of nuclear weapons, even against non-nuclear countries if the situation so warrants was discussed. Importantly, the US, which insists other countries sign the Non Proliferation Treaty, has not signed the Additional Protocol to the NPT so far. All these facts demonstrates that the US' preaching is only for others to follow. The US should change its attitude and act in good faith to eliminate its own nuclear weapons to encourage others to follow suit. C.
