Wells being the sole source of potable water in the suburban and rural areas of Palakkad district, the Kerala Water Authority conducted quality tests on 978 wells in various grama panchayats. Of the 10,037 samples collected, about 2,800 had chemical contents such as iron, chloride, fluoride, nitrate, arsenic etc beyond permissible levels. The Irrigation Minister, Mr T.M. Jacob, who disclosed the figures in the State Assembly, added that chemicals were found in 28 per cent of wells and ponds in the State.
