Suggestions to bail out poultry sector

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Feb. 26

EXTENDING the facility of Kisan Credit Cards to small poultry farmers and grant of at least Rs 25 crore for education & promotion campaign to restore consumer confidence in chicken and eggs following the scare of `bird flu' have been suggested by the National Egg Co-ordination Committee (NECC).

In a letter to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, the NECC Chairperson, Ms Anuradha J. Desai said about 20-30 per cent of the small poultry farmers, which is a sizable number would stand to lose their only means of livelihood, without immediate help. AP is one of the leading States in the poultry industry.

Reports of bird flu have during the past one month resulted in undue scare among consumers of chicken and eggs, leading to an unprecedented drop in farm gate price.

In North India and Maharashtra the price dropped to as low as Rs 10 per Kg against the normal Rs 30 per Kg, pushing the industry into trouble, the NECC said in the letter.

A sustained educative/promotional campaign was necessary to neutralise the adverse impact on the poultry consumption caused by the avian flu. The industry, which has already suffered a heavy loss was not in a position to raise the necessary resources for undertaking such a campaign, the letter said.
