Trade & Labour Unions `Go slow' hits work at Chennai container terminal Raja Simhan T.E.
Chennai , Feb. 27 A "go slow'' in work by non-management staff, including crane operators at Chennai Container Terminal has affected loading and unloading of boxes at the terminal in the last 48 hours. The CCTL workers are demanding a nearly three-fold increase in salary. After the terminal's privatisation in November 2001, for the first time an agitation has affected container movement at CCTL, said a source in the company. Due to "go slow'', there is not only congestion inside the terminal but also trucks were waiting in a long queue, stretching over three-kilometre outside the Chennai harbour in North of the city. A source at CCTL said, "It is an unrealistic demand. Work has slowed down due to the agitation, and it is having a cascading effect on the operations of terminal. We are talking to the workers." There is an hour's delay in loading and unloading of containers, the source said. With the fiscal year coming to end in March, the agitation will severely affect exports. Further, connectivity to mother vessels at various transhipment ports, including Singapore and Colombo would be affected due to the agitation, an industry source said. Meanwhile, due to "go slow'' the Chennai Custom House Agents Association has requested its members not to send export containers to CCTL for the next two days for shipment to avoid congestion. It has also requested the members to keep their containers at container freight stations itself.
