Drought affects honey production in AP

Visakhapatnam , Feb. 29

HONEY produced by Girijans in Andhra Pradesh and marketed by the Girijan Co-operative Corporation (GCC) is in great demand among consumers, but the GCC is unable to match the demand, as supply has been hit due to drought, said Mr A. Vidyasagar, Chairman and Managing Director.

In a statement issued here on Saturday evening, Mr Vidyasagar said the GCC was supplying pure honey to consumers and during the past two years the product had penetrated the market. During 2001-2002, the GCC had supplied 125 tonnes of honey through its 125 distributors and 190 tonnes during the following year. However, production had dropped drastically during May, June and July last year and it was only 151 quintals from June to November against 1,099 quintals during the corresponding period in 2002.

He said the period between December, 2003, to the end of February was also not very encouraging, as only 304 quintals could be produced as against 384 quintals during the corresponding period last year.

He clarified that the scarcity was due to unfavourable climatic conditions and not due to any artificial regulation.
