Letters Steel prices
The hike in steel price affects every sector, directly or indirectly. Other than automakers, house construction may be the other major industry affected by it. Even agriculture could feel the pinch because of the increase in cost of machines and tools. If the poor are affected by the cost of utilities such as cycles, etc., the common may be hit by the increase in prices of consumer goods such as refrigerators, washing machines, and other white goods. Indirectly it could affect employment and the cost of other goods. So, the Government 's action to put a check on spiralling steel prices by "bringing down the Customs and excise duties and freezing the Duty Entitlement Pass Book (DEPB) scheme for steel exports" (Business Line, February 29) is welcome.
