Dayanidhi Maran to contest polls

Our Bureau

Chennai , March 1

MR Dayanidhi Maran, son of the late Union Minister, Murasoli Maran, is among the 15 DMK candidates nominated to contest the Lok Sabha elections to be held on May 10.

Mr Dayanidhi Maran will contest from the Chennai Central constituency, which was represented by Murasoli Maran.

Seven of the 11 members of the dissolved Lok Sabha, including the former Union Ministers, Mr T.R. Baalu, and Mr A. Raja, have been renominated to contest the elections.

The DMK list, released on Monday by its President, Mr M. Karunanidhi, includes three women.

The DMK leads a seven-member coalition, called the Democratic Progressive Alliance. The others in the coalition are: the Congress (I), the PMK, the MDMK, the CPI(M), the CPI and the IUML.

The DMK will contest 15 seats, the Congress (I) 10, the PMK six, including the lone Pondicherry seat, the MDMK four, the CPI(M) and the CPI two each, and the IUML one.

Addressing presspersons after announcing the list of candidates, Mr Karunanidhi said there was sufficient time for deliberate and well-planned strategy for campaigning. It would be slow and steady but not lethargic, he said.
