GMP norms likely for homoeopathic, ayurvedic medicines

Kolkata , March 1

THE Centre is considering to introduce good manufacturing practice (GMP) norms for homoeopathic and ayurvedic medicines.

The Drug Controller General, Mr Ashwini Kumar, has said here that a technical committee has been formed to look into the aspect of manufacturing practices of the units producing homoeopathic and ayurvedic drugs.

The Government wants to bridge the gap between the existing practices and the standardised manufacturing procedures in these units.

Speaking at an interactive session at the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Kumar said in March, there would be a meeting among the regulator, Ministry officials and the industry representatives to evaluate the standards and procedures that might be adopted for these units keeping in view the GMP and safety norms.

He suggested that the standards, procedures and norms might not be identical with those applicable in the allopathic medicine manufacturing, but nationally-accepted guidelines would be put in place soon.

The Drug Controller General also said that for the allopathic drugs, conformity to standards specified by the drug authority would be made more stringent. The conformity to the World Health Organisation norms/standards should be made the criterion for procurement by the Government hospitals, as it happened in certain States.

For granting licences/permissions, the regional offices of the drug controllers were being instructed to follow a uniform procedure and timeframe with an aim to cut down on the delays.

Mr Ashok Gupta, West Bengal Chief Secretary, said the global market for herbal medicine throws up an enormous opportunity for business. According to a survey conducted by Macalpine Thrope Warrier, Commonwealth consultants, the global market for herbal products is expected to grow to Rs 1,60,000 crore by 2010 from the current level of around Rs 36,000 crore.
