`Electronics hardware industry needs boost to compete with China'

INDIAN electronics hardware industry needs a major boost to compete with China in cost-effectiveness and numbers, according to the Consumer Electronics and TV Manufacturers Association (CETMA).

The association is hopeful that this high-technology product, which could fuel the growth of the consumer electronics industry, achieves a critical level of production and economies of scale.

"This objective needs support from the Government, on taxation policies, to make the DVD players affordable to the Indian masses," CETMA said. In fact, it has set a target of 10 million DVD players by 2007.

Despite China's focus on DVD technology, the Indian industry can respond with massive manufacturing investment into DVD players, as the ultimate demand that can be generated would be as large as 20 million DVD players annually.
