Maruti, GM car sales zoom in February

Our Bureau

New Delhi , March 1

MARUTI Udyog Ltd, the country's largest carmaker, on Monday said its car sales have increased by 62 per cent in February 2004 over the same month last year.

The company registered sales of 42,263 units (including 3,022 units of exports) in February this year compared to 26,113 units in February 2003.

Maruti's compact cars (the WagonR, Zen and the Alto) grew by a massive 166 per cent to 19,179 units.

In the mid-size segment (the Baleno and Esteem), Maruti's sales grew by 102 per cent to 1,387 units.

Maruti's main volume driver, Maruti 800, saw sales increase by 22 per cent to 13,518 units.

According to the company, while sales remained strong during the month, the growth figure is unusually high due to a low base.

Car sales in February 2003 were artificially low as customers had postponed new car purchases in anticipation of an excise duty reduction in the Union Budget, which was presented at the end of February 2003.

Subsequently, following the duty reductions, there was a jump in car sales during March 2003.

General Motors: General Motors India has registered a 153-per cent growth in car sales in February 2004 as compared to the same month last year.

The company sold a total of 1,309 cars in February 2004 as against 518 in February 2003.

"The phenomenal growth in sales of GM in India is primarily due to the tremendous response to Chevrolet Optra and Opel Corsa models," said Mr P. Balendran, Vice-President - Corporate Affairs, General Motors India.
