Natural Calamities Crop loss assessment in Pudukottai dist Our Correspondent
MADURAI: The Pudukottai district administration is preparing a detailed assessment of crop loss caused by drought conditions, in 700 revenue villages in the district. According to the District Collector, Mr Hiteshkumar Makwana, the exercise is likely to be completed in a fortnight and the report is to be forwarded soon to the State Government. The administration has prepared a drought contingency plan for providing employment to farmers and agricultural labourers in the district that included desilting of tanks, improvement of supply channels, digging of farm ponds and deepening of open wells. A total of 3,706 development works have been planned to generate more man-days, he added. The Tamilnadu Vivasayigal Sangam, in a memorandum submitted to the Central team that visited a few villages in the district, has pointed out that 90 per cent of 1.36 lakh hectares under cultivation has been affected. Further, farm operations in 11,500 hectares under Cauvery Modernisation project have also been hit. A total of 5,265 tanks in the district have gone dry.
