Non-conventional Energy TN likely to achieve windmill power target by year-end Our Correspondent
Madurai , March 2 STEPS are being taken by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) to create necessary power evacuation facilities for the existing and prospective windmill developers by establishing new sub-stations, providing additional transformers and enhancing the existing capacity of transformers, said the TNEB Chairman, Mr T.S. Sridhar, here. Inaugurating a business meet on `Opportunities for investment in windmills in other potential areas,' organised by the Tamilnadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA), the Chairman said that a target of 300 MW has been fixed for wind power projects under the Tenth Plan. The target is expected to be achieved during the current year. Currently, Tamil Nadu has a comfortable power position. While the installed capacity is around 9052 MW, the peak hour demand is around 7000 MW with the consumption touching 142 million units. Through windmills 1155 MW is tapped. The exploitation is only 25 per cent of the potential. To tap the full potential of 4160 MW, higher capacity turbines are needed, he added.
The Chairman of TEDA, Mr K. Allaudin, addressing the business meet, said that windmills have been commissioned in 17 places in the State. The potential areas identified for the establishment of windmills are Pushpathur in Dindigul district, Rameswaram in Rameswaram district, Andipatti and Meenakshipuram in Theni district, Ottapidaram, Tuticorin, Vagaikulam and Onamkulam in Tuticorin district, Achankuttam, Azhagiyapandiapuram, Ayikudi, Mangalapuram, Uvari, Puliyankulam and Thazhayuthu in Tirunelveli district, he added.
