Orient Longman makes it lighter for school kids

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , March 3

PARENTS and their little ones could soon heave a sigh of relief.

If school education authorities across the country give the `green signal' to publishing house — Orient Longman's novel concept, school children need not carry loads of books. Based on the guidelines set by the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) and SCERT, Orient Longman's has divided each class (first to fifth standard) into three terms, each of them being covered by one book.

"It combines the four core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies," Mr Raj Mani, Vice-President (Schools Division) of Orient Longman, said.

Showcasing the concept at a press conference here on Wednesday, he said the Sangam series was introduced in Tamil Nadu in November. "The response to our test-marketing effort has been overwhelming," he said.

"The children need not carry the whole set of books every day. Instead, they can carry one book through out the term and reduce the burden to a great extent," he said.

Inspired by the Prof. Yashpal Committee's recommendation that the burden on children should be lessened, the Sangam content had been prepared by an experienced team, which included advisers to NCERT.

Mr J. Krishnadev Rao, Director (Commercial), said the concept was introduced in Pondicherry and Karnataka too, earlier this year.

The company expected to complete the nationwide rollout when the schools open for the next academic year.
