Announcements Thomas Cook plans outbound charters Nina Varghese
Chennai , March 4 THOMAS Cook plans to operate outbound charters to cater to its leisure group traffic by the end of this year, according to Mr Ashwini Kakkar, CEO and Managing Director, Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. The company is awaiting Government approvals for this, he said. Mr Kakkar said the company would operate two or three flights a week and the costs, especially for group travel, would come down. For instance, the cost of the fare on the Chennai-London-Chennai sector would be half than what is offered by British Airways, he said. Two new outbound destinations that the company will introduce this year are East Europe and Egypt, Mr Kakkar said On the inbound, the company has been operating 12 charters to Goa and to Kerala through the tourist season. These charters are from Frankfurt, Munich, Brussels and Amsterdam, and would continue until April 15, he said. New business has come from Belgium and the Netherlands, while the traffic from the UK and the German markets has increased by 40 per cent. Over a period of five years, the company has invested Rs 25 crore on information technology. The company has implemented SAP, besides other IT initiatives, and also set up a call centre to deal with domestic enquires. The company has also been expanding its network and has opened new branches in Goa, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. It had earlier won the tender for the foreign exchange counters at both the arrival and departure terminals at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo. In Mauritius, Thomas Cook has four foreign exchange locations and hopes to tap into the remittance service to small traders and businessmen.
