Bharat Seema ship voyage cancelled

Our Bureau

Kochi , March 4

THE sailing of Bharat Seema, operating between Kochi and the Lakshadweep Islands, was cancelled on Thursday following an indefinite fast resorted to by its crew onboard the vessel at Kochi Port.

The 40-member crew was protesting the decision of the Lakshadweep administration to hand over the management of the vessel from the Shipping Corporation of India to the Lakshadweep Development Corporation Ltd from April 1. The crew, belonging to the SCI, are demanding job security after the takeover by the Lakshadweep Development Corporation.

Following the cancellation, as many as 150 passengers were stranded in Kochi, according to port sources. If the agitation continues, the operation of the other vessel Tippu Sultan would also be affected.
