Jayanta Mallick

Kolkata , March 4

THE Department of Neurosciences of the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) in collaboration with The Cleveland Clinic of the US, is organising a two-day international conference here from March 6.

About 300 delegates comprising neurologists, psychiatrists, paediatricians and general practitioners from different parts of the country as also Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Nepal are scheduled to attend the meet. CMRI is a C.K. Birla group outfit.

It is estimated that there are some 60 lakh epileptics in India alone. Roughly one per cent of afflicted persons are in the age group of below 20.

According to the International League Against Epilepsy, there are more than 120 types of epilepsy and the causes vary between idiopathic (where no real cause can be traced) and brain tumour or brain infection.

According to Dr S.K. Biswas, organising secretary of the conference, labelled "Epilepsy Update - 2004", in the field of paediatric neurology, epilepsy was one of the most common disorders found in the country.

"It is important to understand that with the current methods of treatment modalities available, more than 90 per cent cases of epilepsy can be controlled and the patients can lead a normal life."

The issue of rehabilitation of epilepsy patients in developing countries is also an important psycho-social action, which overlaps into the arena of human resources development.

The conference will focus on the newer anti-epilepsy drugs, the role of advancements in surgery for treating epileptics, management of intractable or uncontrolled epilepsy and paediatric disorders.
