Dancers from NY to perform in Hyderabad today

Hyderabad , March 4

A FEW days ahead of the International Women's Day, a troupe of women dancers from New York-based Thresh Dance Company will present a show - Strings Unattached - giving a contemporary expression to ancient texts, on Friday.

The 60-minute dance capsule comprises three pieces, which are not necessarily connected, based on Tenth Mandala of Rig Veda, a `padam' of Poet Kshetrayya and Japanese death poems.

Addressing newsmen on the eve of the performance, Ms Preeti Vasudevan said two years of research went into the programme.

Thresh, a dance-theatre group led by Ms Preethi, is currently holding a series of performances across the country. After performing at places such as Auroville, Bangalore, New Delhi and Mumbai, the group has come to Hyderabad. The last of the shows will be held in Kolkata on March 9.

"Only dance and music will convey the message. There will be no verbal intervention," Ms Preethi said.

Speaking on the `Strings Unattached', she said the first component involved a solo dancer and violin "investigate Bharatanatyam using the game of dice as a metaphor for the unpredictable nature of dancing".
