Thiruvanathapuram , March 5

SWASTHI, a one-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on `Obstetric and Neonatal Dilemmas of Preterm & Growth Restricted Foetuses' will be held here on Sunday at the Hotel Residency Tower.

The CME programme, jointly hosted by SUT Mother & Baby Hospital and the Kerala Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, will be inaugurated by Dr M.N. Rema, Principal, Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, at 8.30 a.m.

According to Dr V. Rajasekharan Nair, President of the federation, Dr Kristin Indhumathi will deliver the first lecture on `Self-Assessment - Pre-test.' Another topic will be `Outcome of LBW Babies - National Scenario,' to be presented by Dr M.K.C Nair, Director, Child Development Centre. Dr Elsie Philip, former principal, Medical College, will chair this session. Dr Alex K. Ittyavirah and Dr Laly Alex will make a presentation on `Genetic Screening.'

Dr Santha Madhavan will share her thoughts on `Rights of the Unborn Foetus,' while Dr K. Radhakumari will speak on `High-risk Pregnancy: Mode of Delivery and Timing.'

Dr Subhadra Nair will be the chairperson for this session. Three hundred obstetricians, neonatologists and paediatricians and post-graduate students from across South India are expected to attend.

Babies born prior to 35 weeks of conception are normally called preterm babies. Changing lifestyle patterns and increasing incidence of obstetric problems are the major factors compelling doctors to deliver more and more babies before 35 weeks, Dr Rajasekharan Nair said.

Nearly 20 experts from different fields will present papers on neonatal and obstetric problems.

Increasing incidences of growth-restricted infants and preterm babies threaten medical science.
