Order to Kochi Corporation

Our Bureau

KOCHI: The Ombudsman for Local Self Government has directed the Kochi Corporation to remove all unauthorised bunks from the city streets. He has also asked the Corporation Secretary to furnish a status report on the number of authorised and unauthorised bunks operating in the city within one month.

The Ombudsman order came while considering a set of complaints regarding the functioning of bunks. Some complained that the bunks were obstructing the free flow of traffic and even causing blocks on the roads leading to some city hospitals.

The Ombudsman also directed the civic authorities not to renew the licences that expire and not to issue fresh licences. The Corporation Secretary intimated the forum that the Corporation's policy was to remove the bunks from the city roads in a phased manner. It would not be possible to remove all the bunks at a stretch as it would lead to unrest, he said.

He also explained to the forum that the civic body had already embarked on a mission to remove bunks from the main city roads. Those bunks creating traffic block in the city would be removed in the first phase.

The Ombudsman also directed the Secretary to approach the Kochi Port for removing the remains of a floating restaurant that has been abandoned in the Kochi backwaters.
