Our Bureau

KOCHI: The World Malayalee Council has launched an eye donation campaign in Ernakulam district with a view to collecting pledges from 1.5 lakh prospective donors. The campaign named "Jyothirgamaya — donation of three lakh eyes" was launched at Mannathur in Thirumaradi panchayat on February 19 by the film actor Boban Kunchacko. Media Arts Mannathur is the key partner of the WMC in this initiative.

The Chief convenor of the campaign, Nitya Sathya told a news conference that several socio cultural activists, traders, artistes and Kudumbasree workers would be involved in the initiative.

He said some 1,000 volunteers would visit the rural homes in 29 panchayats to make them aware of the need for eye donation. Eye donation promises in writing would be taken from those willing. Special workshops and meetings would be held to send the message of eye donation across the rural population.
