Cabinet okays election dates

Our Bureau

New Delhi , March 9

THE Cabinet on Tuesday approved the dates for elections to the Lok Sabha to be held in five phases between April 20 and May 10.

The Government's recommendations will be sent to the President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, for issuance of a notification, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ms Sushma Swaraj, told presspersons after the Cabinet meeting.

The Election Commission had earlier proposed April 20, 22, 26 and May 5 and 10 as dates for conducting the polls. It had earlier suggested four-phased elections. But, the Tripura Government had sought a change of poll dates in the State on April 20 due to a tribal festival `Baba Gariyapuja' on that day. The Commission then suggested that elections in Tripura be held on April 22.
