Kochi port okays cut in vessel-related charges

Kochi , March 9

THE meeting of the board of trustees of the Kochi Port has approved a proposal made by the Chairman to reduce vessel-related charges by 30 per cent with respect to container vessels.

According to port officials, a decision in this regard was taken so as to encourage competition and attract larger vessels.

The reduction is expected to bring in more traffic and will also encourage the bidders to participate in the international container trans-shipment terminal project.

The Cochin Steamer Agents Association has welcomed the proposal, saying that it is a step in the right direction to attract more cargo.

Vessel-related charges in Kochi are among the highest compared to other ports in the region.

The association is confident that the reduction will attract more mainline vessels, thereby increasing throughput.
