S. Rly unveils new technique to clean bogies

Our Correspondent

Madurai , March 9

THE Southern Railway's Golden Rock workshop at Tiruchi has introduced an innovative environment-friendly technique for cleaning bogies.

According to Mr G.R.K.Raju, Chief Workshops Manager, bogies were earlier cleaned using electric heaters in the caustic soda bath. Under the new technique, the bogies are now being cleaned using lubricating oil released from the engines.

The process, while helping to recycle the waste fuel, enabled to avoid smoke at the worksite. The average daily collection of the lubricating oil was about 200 litres, he added, while speaking at the safety week celebrations organised at the workshop.

He added many mechanised gadgets have been designed for use at the materials handling yard which besides doing away with manual operations, simplified not only the process but ensured also safety of the workers at the site. The number of accidents has come down from about 300 in 1983 to 19 during 2003, he observed.
