Lift ban, demand clay miners in Kerala

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala China Clay Mine Owners' Association has demanded of the State Government to lift the ban on mining of clay from the neighbouring Mangalapuram village.

The ban was imposed on the face of popular outcry that indiscriminate mining in the area, which is home to reputedly the world's best quality clay, had led to lowering of the ground water table creating acute drinking water scarcity.

According to Mr E.A. Rasheed, General Secretary, and Mr N.S. Babu, Treasurer, of the association, water scarcity in the region was an outcome of the larger drought-like situation stalking the State, and could not be blamed on mining activity

Speaking on the occasion, Mr John Samuel, a former director of the Mining and Geology Department and mining consultant, said the water scarcity could be attributed best to poor absorption of rainwater by clayey soil.
