Dry weather prevails over Kerala

SAVE for Alappuzha, which recorded `deficient' rainfall, all other districts in the State went absolutely dry through the 10-day period ending March 10, according to the Agromet Advisory dated March 11 issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram.

Chertala, in Alappuzha district, recorded isolated 0.9 mm rain on March 10.

Mean maximum temperature varied between 33 deg C and 37 deg C in various districts. The highest maximum at 38.5 deg C was recorded at Kottayam on March 9.

The maximum temperature was 4 deg above normal in Alappuzha on March 10, and 3 Deg above normal in Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts on March 9.

Forecast valid until March 13 spoke about mainly dry weather in the State. Outlook for the two subsequent days did not indicate any significant change.

State and stage of crops: The Puncha paddy crop has reached the seedling stage. Harvesting is in progress in the Puncha fields in Kuttanad. Almost all crops are undergoing irrigation activity, depending on the availability of water.

Harvesting and processing activities continue in nutmeg and clove. Seed nuts are being collected from coconut. In pepper, preparation of rooted cuttings is progressing.

Advisory for 4 days: Irrigation in coconut gardens, if already started with, must be carried on systematically. Collection and storing of seed nuts can be continued. Intercultural operations, top dressing and new planting can be practised in banana and vegetables, wherever irrigation facilities permitted.

Planting of yam, sweet potato and tapioca can also be carried out.
