Outsourcing `Train students to meet BPO demand' Our Bureau
Chennai , March 11 THE business process outsourcing (BPO) sector is likely to have one million employees in the next five years from the present two lakh. Revenue from the sector is projected to be over $10 billion by 2006. However, are there people who are truly employable in the sector? No, said Mr P.S. Raghavan, Executive Director, Sundaram Business Services. It is not a happy state of affairs. The sector needs manpower with good communication skills and industry specialists, he said. With the BPO sector certain to provide a huge employment opportunity, educational institutions should provide adequate knowledge and training to students. Are they providing the right type of people to be absorbed by the BPO sector? It is a moot question, he said while speaking at seminar on `Operating a BPO outfit - The inside story'. The seminar was organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce and Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council here on Thursday. Mr B. Venkataramana, Head, Human Resources, Training and Administration at Brigade Corporation (P) Ltd, said that recently the company could recruit only eight candidates out of 1,100 applications that it received in response to an advertisement.
