ICFAI faculty members win awards in case competition

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , March 11

TWO of the faculty members of the ICFAI Centre for Management Research, Mr A. Mukund and Ms A. Neela Radhika, have bagged the top award in the Eighth Regional Asia-Pacific Case Writing Competition for their case on the Japanese telecom giant DoCoMo.

Another faculty member, Mr Vivek Gupta, won the first runner-up prize for his case `FedEx Vs. UPS in China — Competing with contrasting strategies'.

The Dean, Mr S.S. George, told presspersons here on Thursday that the Vocational Training Council's Management Development Centre of Hong Kong had organised the competition, which was sponsored by the Hong Kong Society of Accountants and Northwest Airlines, while the American Chamber of Commerce Charitable Foundation sponsored the prizes.

According to him, the case competition since its inception in 1988 has attracted over 40 high quality case submissions every year from leading business schools and management colleges from Hong Kong, China, the UK, Taiwan, the US, Canada and Australia.

For the past four consecutive years, the Canada-based Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, had bagged the top awards in the competition.

Mr George said the DoCoMo case discusses the highly successful business model followed by the Japanese wireless telecom major.

It details the company's I-Mode service, its 3G initiatives and the globalisation efforts. The case also examines the problems DoCoMo faced due to technology and competition related issues, and its decreasing revenues due to market saturation.

As against this, the case of `FedEx Vs. UPS' discusses the entry and expansion strategies of the two US-based logistics companies in the Chinese market.

It also examines how the expansion of both companies has changed with the improving business prospects in China, following its entry into the World Trade Organisation.
