GKB Lens set to unveil designer sunglasses

Ambar Singh Roy

Kolkata , March 13

HAVING tied up sourcing arrangements with design and production houses in Italy and Germany, domestic eye-care major GKB Rx Lens Pvt. Ltd is all set to launch a contemporary Poly Carbonate UV 400 range of designer sunglasses in the Indian market.

Mr Lalit Gupta, Director (Marketing), told Business Line that the entire range of imported designer sunglasses - for men, women and children - would be available in exclusive GKB outlets in Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata and the company's soon-to-be-opened outlet in Mumbai.

Mr Gupta said these sunglasses were especially designed keeping in view the complexion and physical features of the faces of Indian men and women, such as the shape and size of the face, the nose bridge, etc. The targeted clientele were those in the 15-50 age group, who wear sunglasses not just for protection of their eyes but also use them as a contemporary and trendy fashion accessory.

According to him, the size of the Indian market for designer sunglasses at present is small and its growth over the years has been hindered by the high price of even entry-level global eyewear brands. "Our objective is to make designer sunglasses affordable and help grow the market," Mr Gupta said, adding that, in India, barely five out of 100 potential customers wear sunglasses. In contrast, in Europe 95 per cent of the potential sunglass users actually wear sunglasses.

The GKB range of designer sunglasses are priced at between Rs 750 and Rs 2,650 per piece. The company has earmarked a corpus of Rs 25 lakh for advertisements and promotion activity. GKB Rx Lens, which recorded a turnover of Rs 32 crore in 2002-03, hopes to notch up a turnover exceeding Rs 40 crore during the financial year ending March 31, 2004.
