PF arrears

This refers to the news item "PF arrears soar to Rs 1, 377 crore: PSUs a drag on recovery" (Business Line, March 15). It is deplorable that the public sector undertakings, which should be the `model employers', have failed to remit the statutory Provident Fund dues, thereby depriving the workers of their rights.

The reason for investing high powers in the Provident Fund authorities for effecting recovery of dues is that employers often fail to remit the dues in time. But continued defaulting on the same and the lack of enforcement of the law will defeat the purpose of the Act and ultimately be detrimental to the very existence of the Provident Fund Scheme.

It is time the Provident Fund authorities took all coercive actions, including prosecution of responsible persons of the defaulting PSUs, in accordance with the provisions of the Act, as they do in the case of private companies.
