EC urged to tell poll candidates to declare bank dues

Coimbatore , March 15

THE All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) has appealed to the Election Commission to issue a directive to the candidates contesting in the Lok Sabha elections to furnish details of their financial liabilities and dues to the banks.

Stating that the association has been demanding the Government to have the names of bank loan defaulters publicised since the loans are being advanced from out of the public deposits, the Secretary of the AIBEA Mr C.H. Venkatachalam, lamented that the Government had taken no initiative on these lines until now.

Welcoming the recent direction of the Delhi High Court on the need to publish the details of dues by candidates for availing themselves of public utilities such as telephone, water and electricity charges, he said: "We are encouraged by the High Court's direction that such information should be made public."

He expressed the hope that the Election Commission would ensure to issue instructions for disclosing the financial liability details of the candidates contesting in the election.

The bank unions, he said were on the job, preparing the list of loan defaulters, for handing over to the Election Commission very soon.
