Awards & Honours Retail, FM radio lend Spark to Ad Club awards Our Bureau
Chennai , March 15 RETAIL and FM radio have made a difference to Spark 2004, the Advertising Club Madras's 27th awards event. This year, there has been a spurt of entries in the point-of-sale advertising category (Chennai being a big retail market) and radio advertising (spurred by the emergence and growth of FM radio), which has taken the total number of entries to 712, against 654 last year. Speaking to Business Line, Mr Vijay Xavier, past president and committee member in charge of awards this year, said 65 agencies were in the fray this time, marked by many new and small ones, some of them potential winners. The contest is open to advertising agencies from the South. In another noticeable trend, there were more entries in the `less than 30-seconds TV commercials' category than in the `more than 30-seconds' category, which was a fallout of the higher media cost and viewers' preference for short duration ads, Mr Xavier said. The awards are based on weighted average scores in each category, judged in a very transparent and confidential process, Mr Xavier said. There are 36 categories in all. This year, the Chairman of the Jury is Mr K. V. Sridhar (or Pops, as he is known in the ad world), who is the National Creative Director, Leo Burnett. JWT, Chennai and Bangalore, shared the Agency of the Year award the previous year. The award for Art Director of the year went to Jaju Krishnan Kutty of JWT Chennai and that for `Copywriter of the Year' to Chockalingam of the same agency.
