Zydus plea to allow import of Pekin duck eggs

Our Bureau

Ahmedabad , March 15

THE Zydus Cadila has represented with the Government to be allowed the import of specific pathogen free (SPF) eggs of Pekin ducks from the UK.

The plea is for a waiver on an existing ban by the Government on chicken and eggs from all countries, following the outbreak of the highly pathogenic avain influenza virus (HPAIV), commonly known as the bird flu.

The Zydus Cadila has been importing 6,000 Pekin duck eggs per week from the UK to produce anti-rabies vaccine from the egg embryo, according to a company official.

There was no shortage of the raw material as on date, with two-three doses of the vaccine being made from each egg, he said.
