Spices & Condiments Chilli trade in Guntur comes to standstill Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , March 16 TRANSACTIONS were halted at the chilli marketyard in Guntur, the biggest in the State, on Tuesday over a dispute between farmers and the buyers about the wages to be paid to the hamalis (workers) handling the chilli bags. Earlier, it was agreed that farmers and the buyers should share the handling charges (Rs 1.50 per tikki, a bag of chilli), but the farmers were not content with it. They refused to part with their share when transactions commenced on Tuesday morning and in response the buyers stopped purchase of chillies. The irate farmers hurled stones at the marketyard office and a few two-wheelers in the yard were burnt down. The police entered the scene and brought the situation under control. Currently, the prices are ruling in the range of Rs 2,700-3,200 per quintal in the yard, the average price being Rs. 2,700 per quintal. The AP Markfed is also buying chillies at that rate to stabilise the prices. The district officials are trying to resolve the issue and resume transactions in the yard.
