THE Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Ltd (APGENCO) will be shortly finalising the contractor for setting up an 11 million tonnes per annum coal washery in Talcher area of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) in Orissa. The contract is for setting up the washery on build-own-operate basis. It will be commissioned in two phases.
According to an APGenco press release here on Wednesday, the first phase with a capacity of 7 million tonnes of raw coal will cater to the existing six units of the 1,260 MW Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (VTPS) and the second phase of 4 million tonnes will cater to VTPS expansion project of 660 MW. The first phase will be commissioned in 20 months and the second phase a year later.
By going in for open tenders, the press release stated, APGenco had significantly reduced the cost of beneficiations. The lowest quotation received was Rs 57 per tonne. MCL had agreed to give 20 hectares of land near Kalinga Mines for setting up "India's largest coal washery."
Apart from substantial savings in transportation cost, the washery will enable APGenco to meet international environmental norms in regard to carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide emissions.
