Our Bureau

GUNTUR: Transactions resumed at the Guntur chilli market yard on Wednesday after a day's disruption.

The district officials intervened to settle a dispute over handling charges, which was resolved after it was agreed between farmers and the buyers that in all Rs 7.50 should be paid per tikki (a bag of chilli) as hamali charges and weighment charges.

On Wednesday, 1.4 lakh tikkis were sold in the yard at an average price of Rs 2,500 a quintal. The Markfed continued its purchases as a market intervention measure. Markfed officials said that another chilli procurement centre would be opened at Sattenapalli in the district for the benefit of farmers. Chillies will be bought at a price of Rs 2,700 a quintal.
